A Kindness Challenge

Today is garbage day.  Today is extremely windy!  Guess what that means?  Garbage cans will get knocked over!

On our way home from taking my son to school my daughter commented how sad it was that someone's garbage can had fallen over because of the wind.

I turned the car around and we drove back to that garbage can and picked it up.  Then we picked up the garbage that had fallen out.  It took less than a minute.

I kept thinking about this all morning long.  How many times do we drive by a blown over garbage can, pieces of garbage, etc.  How many times do we just casually walk past the person in a motorized cart at the store as they strain to grab something off a shelf that's a little too high?  How many times do we walk past and think to ourselves how sad that is?  And yet we do nothing to help?  I know I've done it way too many times.

What if we really started to see the very simple ways we can serve one another?  There are opportunities all around us everyday.  Would it really make a difference?

It was obvious that there was nobody home when we picked up their trash.  They will never know that there can was knocked over and that we stopped to help.  That's OK.  It's not about getting noticed.  It's all about seeing those small opportunities.

So next time you are out and about look around.  Do you see that person on crutches that needs help loading her groceries?  Do you see that mom that has a screaming child?  Do you see that elderly person reaching on their tippy toes for a bottle of salad dressing?  Do you see that person who just dropped their books and papers?  Do you help or do you just keep walking by thinking to yourself that it's good that it didn't happen to you?

You you have an extra minute in your day to help someone?  You do!  I think that we've grown so accustom to just focusing on ourselves that we forget that others are out there needing just a minute of our time.  JUST ONE MINUTE!!

Don't worry if some say "no" when you try to help them.  Just keep on looking there are others out there!

Go find them!!  It will totally brighten your day!
